The power of familial relationships made it to centre stage at the Provincial Drama Festival in Grand Falls-Windsor Friday, as the curtain rose on the theatrical production of Martin McDonagh's The Lonesome West.

The Beothuck Street Players of St. John's walked away with six awards, including best play, for their performance.

The production struck a chord with adjudicator Michael Chiasson. In his post-show remarks, Chiasson had high words of praise for the play, including compliments for the set, the lighting, the production values and the acting.

The four central characters were given credit for pulling the audience into a performance that while at times difficult to watch, sent a powerful message about human nature by the time the final scene drew to a close.

The honours bestowed on the St. John's production included Best Presentation of a Full-length Play, the Audience Appreciation Award, Best Performance by a Male Actor (Stephen

Holmes), Most Innovative and Imaginative Set Design and Best Visual Presentation. Jessica Natiuk also received the VOCM Scholarship Award.
