Winter 2000 Production

Frank McGuinness'
Someone Who'll Watch Over Me

Directed by
Clar Doyle

Produced by
Ted Quinlan

"There were three bollocks in a cell in Lebanon. An Englishman, an Irishman, and an American. Why they were in that cell was anybody's guess, and why they were in Lebanon was their own guess."

These echoes of black comedy reverberate off the prison walls in Beothuck Street's production of McGuinness' play. It is such humor that sustains the prisoners in this "gritty and intense psychodrama about three men held hostage by a militant Islamic faction in Beirut. Armed with "grim humour and defiant gaiety", these men alternately struggle with each other, retreat into themselves and reach out tentatively for meaning and compassion as they to cling to their humanity in inhuman circumstances.
